When Malala was ten years old, something
terrible happened. Several years earlier, the US
had attacked Afghanistan, and a military group
called the Taliban came from there to Swat.

Soon the Taliban controlled much of the Swat
Valley, and they made new laws. Some of the laws
governed things that women could do. The Taliban
stopped all girls from getting an education. Malala
could no longer attend school.
When people didn't obey their laws, the Taliban
punished or even killed them. Even under such
