Shirakawa Yuko talks in a magazine about what it is like to be
a nurse in a war zone.
I work as a nurse for MSF. First, let me tell you why I joined
MSF.
I went through most of my high school years without having
any idea what I wanted to do with my life. In the fall of my last
year, a friend told me she would go to nursing school. "I want
to be a nurse, too!" I burst out spontaneously. The entrance
exams were only four months away, but I was now determined
to become a nurse. I studied very earnestly and passed the
examination.

I already knew about MSF, having seen a TV program about
it when I was a little girl. I even dreamed of joining it one day.
That dream came back to me after I worked as a nurse for
several years. In order to join MSF, I had to be able to speak 15
English fluently. So, I decided to study in Australia. There I
worked hard to improve my English, and after that I acquired
more nursing experience. Then I was finally accepted by MSF.
