The present sinmple 現在形
普段のこと
In the present simple we use the verb without an
ending:
Iget the lunch ready at one o 'clock, usually.
We play tennis most weekends.
Most children like ice-cream.
We play
tennis
most
weekends.
But in the third person singular (after he, she, it,
friend etc), the verb ends ins or es:
your
He wants some help.
My sister catches the early train.
I/you/we/they play
he/she/it plays
We use a form of do in negatives and questions. We use do and don't except in the third person
singular, where we use does and doesn't.
Negatives: We don't play tennis in winter.
Questions: Do you play tennis?
He doesn't want any help.
What does he want?
I/you/we/they do not play OR don't play
| he/she/it does not play OR doesn't play
do I/you/we/they play?
does he/she/it play?
We do not adds to the verb in negatives and questions.
NOT Hedoesn'tplays- or -Does he plays?-
We use the present simple for repeated actions and for thoughts, feelings and states. For more
details about use see Unit 2.
